First battery recycling task force meeting sets regulatory and oversight priorities

China’s national EV battery recycling task force held its first meeting on 26 May 2025. Industry Minister Li Lecheng chaired the session, which set priorities for the recycling system with representatives of member authorities.

The meeting prioritised legislation and standards, including faster development of regulations and mandatory lithium battery safety specifications, under the national recycling action plan.

Oversight priorities covered battery production, vehicle retirement and dismantling. Digital monitoring of battery movements was proposed alongside enforcement against polluting illegal dismantling and unlicensed operations.

The task force also called for joint work on technology, processes and equipment, wider deployment of advances, and dynamic management allowing enterprises to enter or leave the industry compliance lists.
