China’s lithium battery output reaches 1,170 GWh in 2024, up 24%

China produced 1,170 GWh of lithium-ion batteries in 2024, up 24% from a year earlier, according to figures released by MIIT on 27 February 2025. The industry’s output value exceeded RMB 1.2 trillion.

Consumer, storage and traction battery output reached 84 GWh, 260 GWh and 826 GWh respectively. Installations in new energy vehicles and new energy storage exceeded 645 GWh, an increase of 48%.

Material production also increased. Cathode materials, anode materials, separators and electrolyte reached about 3.1 million tonnes, 2 million tonnes, 21 billion square metres and 1.3 million tonnes, all growing by more than 20%. Battery-grade lithium carbonate output rose 45% to about 670,000 tonnes.

Lower product prices contributed to a 5% decline in battery export value to RMB 434.8 billion, although the decline narrowed by seven percentage points from the first half. Average battery-grade lithium carbonate and hydroxide prices were RMB 90,000 and RMB 87,000 per tonne.
